Phonics, Spelling & Reading

Phonics

At Lightwoods, we follow the Letters and Sounds Phonics programme.

There are six incremental phases. Phase One concentrates on activities to promote speaking and listening skills, phonological awareness and oral blending and segmenting.Phase Two to Six focus on high quality phonic work to ensure that by the end of Key Stage 1 children develop fluent word reading skills and have good foundations in spelling.

There is a statutory assessment at the end of year 1.Children need to be able to read pseudo (nonsense) words as well as real words.Children that have not met the threshold have to be reassessed in year 2 following phonics intervention.

Spelling

In addition to our phonics teaching we have a number of initiatives to raise the profile of spelling:
  • Each week, a new spelling rule is taught in class and children complete short activities to help learn the rule.
  • A set of 10 spellings linked to the taught rule is sent home to be learnt each week and will be tested the following week.
  • Practising spelling at home helps to reinforce and consolidate learning.

Spelling tests are a good way to ensure spellings are learnt but it is essential that pupils apply these skills to their writing.This process is supported through a range of writing opportunities across the curriculum; marking pupil’s work to assess progress and encouraging children to edit their spellings and make corrections using a dictionary.

Reading

At Lightwoods reading is a skill taught, practised and promoted throughout the school, across the whole curriculum and through a range of strategies:
  • Reading for pleasure
  • Reading homework
  • Phonics lessons
  • Guided Reading
  • Reading comprehension
  • The study of a range of genres of text
  • Class Texts
  • Reading for the wider curriculum, related to topics
  • Access to the school library

Reading materials have been compiled from a range of different schemes including Collins Big Cat, Ginn, Sky Racer and Oxford Reading Project X. Other texts, not linked to a scheme, by well-known authors, are also studied to ensure children experience a wealth of literature.

The children also have access to a range of books to read individually and take home for reading homework. These include fiction, non-fiction and poetry books from the Oxford Reading Tree, Collins Big Cat Phonics and ‘real books’ by popular authors.

We also enjoy celebrating themed days to promote a love of reading, such as World Book Day which is held each March. We also invite authors in from time to time to share their stories with the children and encourage creative writing.
