English Captain Tom Moore Comprehension: Children to read the comprehension about Captain Tom (support can be given to read through the text) Use the following discussion points to help their understanding further. Discussion Points: -What is the NHS? The NHS, National Health Service, are in charge of keeping people healthy. It is the health service that everybody in the UK can use when they become poorly or injured, to help them to get better like hospitals, dentists, doctors, care homes. - An ex-soldier is someone who used to be a soldier or used to be in the army, navy or air force. - ‘Challenge’ means doing something difficult that puts you to the test. Can the children think of anything they do that is a challenge? - Discuss the meaning of ‘word quickly spread’. What do they think it means? When news or information gets passed to many people very quickly. -Why did people send him thank you and birthday cards? Ask children what they think first. People who learnt about what he was doing thought he was an inspiration and his idea to help the NHS was a special and very important as the money could help the NHS get poorly people better. Following reading through, children can answer the questions |
