Welcome to Year 4.
Your class teacher is Miss Bone.
Your support staff is Mrs Shakespeare.
In our English lessons, we will be exploring a range of fiction and non-fiction texts including poetry. We will be reading Ted Hughes’ ‘The Iron Man’ and using this as a stimulus in order to developing our reading, writing and speaking and listening skills. We will also be linking our English curriculum to our history topics and will be writing our own myths based on the classic Anglo-Saxon poem, ‘Beowulf’.
In our Maths sessions, we will be developing our understanding of mental and written methods for the four operations. Children will continue to develop their knowledge of fractions and will begin to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. In Geometry, Measures & Statistics, children will be consolidating and extending their knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. All our maths sessions will have a range of activities to build mathematical fluency and opportunities for reasoning and problem solving.
In the first half term, we will be looking at the human body and how muscles and the skeleton are affected by diet and exercise. We will be carrying out different investigations in order to develop our scientific understanding.
After half term, our Science topic will be ‘Sound’. We will be exploring different types of sounds and understanding how vibrations allow us to hear a range of sounds.
We are excited to start our history topics, which will be looking at how the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings invaded Britain. We will be exploring a range of sources and asking questions such as, ‘Was life in Anglo-Saxon Britain better than Roman Britain?’ and ‘The Vikings: Ruthless killers or peaceful settlers?’
