Welcome to Year 5.
Your class teacher is Mrs Lines.
Your support staff is Miss Deakin.
In our English lessons, we will be exploring a range of fiction and non-fiction text types including poetry. We will read a range of books as a class and use these to inspire us to write. We will continue to improve our sentence structure using a range of punctuation and writing different sentence types, as well as expanding our vocabulary through use of dictionaries and thesauruses. We will use these skills to edit and improve our writing, proof reading it regularly and aiming for improvements which have an intended effect on the reader. We also have daily English skills sessions covering spelling, grammar, punctuation and reading comprehension.
In our Maths lessons, we will be developing our understanding of number and place value and continue learning how to apply appropriate strategies to solve multiplication, division, addition and subtraction problems with increasingly larger numbers. We will also be expanding our knowledge of fractions and their equivalence with decimals and percentages. We have daily Maths skills sessions covering fluency in both written and mental arithmetic, and applying this knowledge to solve a range of reasoning problems.
Our first science topic is Earth and Space, during which we will be developing our understanding of our Solar System. We will have a visit from a mobile planetarium as well as a trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester
Our next Science topic is Forces, where we will investigate friction and other types of resistance, mechanisms and gravity.
In Geography, we will be answering the question: How do volcanoes affect the lives of people in Hiemaey? This is a study of the human and physical geography of this small island in an archipelago in Iceland.
In History we will be looking at the Ancient Egyptian civilisation and studying their way of life and impact on World history.
